Location Profile: Sliema

Located on the northeast coast of Malta is the ever popular town of Sliema, acquiring its name, meaning peace or serenity, from a chapel dedicated to ‘Our Lady of The Sea’ (Stella Maris), and built around 1855, which also served as a reference point to the local fishermen of the time. Sliema started life as a quiet fishing village and one of Malta’s first tourist destinations, but it slowly evolved into what we know today, a highly sought after prime residential and commercial hub. With its beautiful coastal promenade stretching seven kilometres from St.Julians, on one side, right through to Ta’ Xbiex, on the other, you need look no further if you are seeking an upmarket, central, seafront location, offering some of the finest amenities in Malta with stunning sea views, restaurants, cafes and excellent transport links.

One of the highlights of this cosmopolitan town is the spectacular strolls along the vast promenade, a hive of activity by day and night with walkers, joggers and people of all ages enjoying the scenic position and sea views. There are also plenty of hotels, to suit all budgets, and many other attractions, such as Independence Gardens (known locally as Exiles), various children’s playgrounds, and multiple beach clubs scattered along the shoreline. Sliema, is also a very popular swimming location, especially in the warmer months as the sea temperatures rise (although many locals swim all year round!), plus there are many sun-bathing areas on the vast limestone beaches.

Another big attraction of Sliema is the sheer quality of amenities in the area, from sophisticated shopping malls like The Point at Tigne Point to the incredible variety of restaurants, cafes, and bars that are positioned all over the locality including many well known international brands. Sliema also has excellent transport links with Malta International Airport, which is only 25 minutes away by car, plus there are many bus routes passing through the area to all parts of the island, as well as the fantastic selection of boats and tours that are available, including the speedy ferry to Valletta (5 minutes journey time) and many other choices such as the Grand Harbour, the Three Cities and beyond to the islands of Comino and Gozo. Sliema is also just a few minutes’ walk from the bustling town of St.Julians and Spinola Bay, with their vibrant nightlife and abundance of restaurants, so it’s easy to see why this area has become so sought after.

In terms of real estate options, Sliema has a magnificent range of properties for both sales and letting, from luxurious lifestyle developments like Tigne Point and Fort Cambridge, (that specialise in spectacular Apartments and Penthouses), to exquisite period Townhouses and House of Character with wonderful architectural features.
